At the right time and in the right place, a Brand Ambassador can work wonders. Right now, that place is Cameroon, and the face representing MTN is local hero and international soccer superstar, Samuel Eto’o.
It all started in November 2015 when Cameroonians began Tweeting the impossible and ridiculous things Eto’o can do under the hashtag #etoopeut (#etoocan). The country’s imagination ran wild, and within weeks, Eto’o had amassed a list of feats that would put Chuck Norris to shame.
This off-beat commercial draws on Samuel’s ability to do the seemingly unimaginable, while casually cruising the fastest internet in Cameroon. While balancing a motorbike on his finger with two passengers aboard it, he texts and Tweets and goes all “crazy-crazy internetty”. And then he makes it rain pineapples. Why? Because he can.
In Cameroon, the only thing they love more than soccer is Cameroonian soccer’s biggest star and former captain of the national team, Samuel Eto’o.
The press ups that pushed MTN even higher
This commercial followed a few months after successfully introducing Eto’o as MTN Cameroon’s Brand Ambassador. The narrative again focuses on Eto’s ability to do amazing things – just as the MTN network allows its customers to do amazing things.
The off-beat nature of the campaign seems to have struck a chord with Cameroon where telecommunications is a hotly contested market.
