Catch me if you can…our latest ad for Discovery

When briefed on the Discovery EPL and Sky News Sponsorships, there were many challenges ahead, but none as big as those involving their new brand ambassador, Wayde van Niekerk. The Olympic Gold Medalist and World Champion was already in Italy, preparing for and competing in the latest race season, and a strict training schedule meant that time with him would be limited. Helicopters, an international crew and a cast of 6 young Waydes, were just a few of the things we needed to get the job done.

The ad tells the story of a little boy, Wayde van Niekerk, who’s love for watching the EPL football leads to his passion for running. We follow him as he grows up to be a devout EPL fan, always sprinting to catch the game. He watches through a neighbour’s window, in front of an electronic store and at a house party, but he never quite gets to see the final goal. The ad ends with Wayde running down the streets of Gemona, Italy where he is training. He arrives at a local restaurant, just in time to see the winning goal.

The idents follow Wayde van Niekerk as he trains in the beautiful surrounds of Gemona, Italy. In each scenario, we find a person or people enjoying an outdoor activity in a seemingly remote place. The tranquility is briefly interrupted with an unexpected greeting from the World Champion as he sprints past.
